Drawing on the rich history of ceramic tile and its potential as a powerful artistic element, I create personal, custom, and very site-specific hand-built tile pieces. My projects are rooted in the presence of natural world elements and are shaped by our deep, collective need to connect with our natural world around us.

FOR THE LOVE OF READING

Installed at Black Bird Bookstore & Cafe, San Francisco

A two-story tile mural intended to capture how we feel when we are reading, lost in a good book.

Viewed from the ground floor, the tile captures imagery from the bookstore’s garden. As we move upward, through to the second floor, the shapes become less referential and split apart, the colors and images of our surroundings and our thoughts coalesce, as our imagination takes hold. The tile extends and stops at the skylight, now an abstract tile painting at the second floor, and our imaginations continue past the glass, to the sky.

INTERESTED IN A CUSTOM PIECE?

Be it a tile mural, a fireplace, a backsplash, a floor, a ceiling, a restaurant wall... my hand-built tile is an artistic expression. It is a collaboration with you, incorporating your interests, the details and nuances of the setting, and the greater architectural context.

Where your custom tile will reside is where the first ideas form. As a person who is particularly attuned to place and setting, I’ll bring my observations to the conversation. We’ll discuss practicalities and color palettes, conceptual intent alongside daily habits and personal preferences. We’ll consider details that are enduring. As collaborators we will create something very special, lasting, and unique.

And because many people ask, I occasionally have individual tiles for sale, typically leftovers from previous projects, or sample explorations.

FIREPLACE

Kirkham St. House, San Francisco

This fireplace celebrates its proximity to the wild Pacific Ocean. These tiles capture the feel of the ocean, the sky, the tidal surges.

Meant to present more than a simple fireplace surround, but rather as an abstract sculptural painting. The glazes overlap and layer, giving depth to the 2 dimensional surface. The palette choice and its subtleties add restraint to the overall presence of the fireplace, comfortable in the corner, and celebrating its role as a hearth in the modern home.
